Today we were fortunate to have Suzanne Knowler and Mandy Murphy from the Southern District Health Board visit and inform us about the history of Vaccinations. We also learned about the Immune system and how it works, details about the New Zealand Immunisation schedule and the diseases this prevents.
We watched fascinating videos about Polio and the story of Paul Alexander a polio survivor who has spent the majority of his life living in a Iron Lung machine. We also discussed the Maverick who discovered vaccines Edward Jenner in 1796 and how he risked a child's life with his experiment, but developed an important vaccine against Smallpox. The students were really interested in all the information shared and the video clips, they had some insightful questions as well.
