We had a fantastic day discovering the history and the many forest and wildlife in Omaui. Once again our students were privileged to have Mr Lloyd Esler guide us through the track, in which he created. Lloyd's project took around six years to complete, which involved many helicopter trips to transport the tonnes of gravel and the 600 sheets of plastic matting required for the trail, not forgetting the many volunteers who helped develop the trail.
Our students took plenty of photos and asked just as many questions to Mr Esler (who is quite honestly a walking encyclopedia). Mr Esler demonstrated safe food foraging, edible funghi and berries and also plants that Maori used for medicinal purposes before modern medicine. They will use these to help develop a short iMovie of their discoveries.
Thanks to Violetta and Rod for your assistance on our adventure.
