Our first year students have had another very busy week at enrich@ILT. It was great to read their 'I am ....poems' and how they shared an insight into their personalities and wonderings. The students finished the day off with talent development. The performance group were working through their new script based on one of Shakespeare's plays, the photography group were editing photos using Photofunia and the math group completing their dodecahedron models.
In Talent Development, our returning students have been busy investigating patterns in mathematics. Below we have Barrix and Enoch generating the 12th row of Pascals Triangle.
The students also investigated fibonacci numbers and how the number sequence can be used to generate the Golden Spiral, which occurs in nature.
Hello my name is Hannah McIlhone. Today at enrich we had a special guest… Mary- Jane Thomas.
Mary-Jane is a crown lawyer which is the lead lawyer practically. She was invited to speak to us about what it takes to be a gifted person. She shared some quite interesting information like bullies usually bully others because they hurt on the inside. They think it makes then stronger to be bullying others. She also said that when she was little she had buck teeth and glasses. Other kids used to bully her a lot because she looked so funny!
Mary-Jane encouraged us all to be proud of who we are and to respect others.
Today the Thursday students started compiling a Glossary of words relating to Patterns. They had interesting discussions about the definitions, and they located some amazing images to accompany the word meanings. They also learned not to accept the online Dictionary definitions, and to try to find meaning by searching wider. Then placing their definition into their own words and in a way that shows their understanding. Jessica and Jaguar have their examples posted below...
Today , with huge anticipation and excitement the Tuesday students began learning their choice of either Spanish or Mandarin. Thanks to the students and whanau that embraced the Homethink challenge this week. Remembering something for a whole week, is a challenge in itself! We have really enjoyed the items and discussions that students have shared with us all. It has been an interesting immersion activity into what you know and understand about patterns! The favourite today was probably Mikey the Red Eared Turtle. We also had a fabulous tapa cloth shared by Jada that I do not have a picture of. Simply stunning! The language and descriptive words have been very insightful used to describe the various patterns.
From sharing items found at home, venturing out and about the centre capturing images to create a pattern collage and working in groups to categorise keywords and images. It's great to see our students being immersed in a variety of activities relating to our Universal Concept, Patterns.
