We had a real treat for our Tuesday students with a special visit by Tabitha Leucker, a general practitioner with a real passion for teaching students about the brain. The students learned about the key components and functions of the nervous system including the brain stem which she called the survival system, feelings and the Limbic System and the thinking brain being the Cerebral Cortex system
We also discussed the systems of neurons, dendrites and glial, The glial cells surround neurons and provide support for and insulation between them. Glial cells are the most abundant cell types in the central nervous system.
She explained to the students how to keep their brain online by breathing the four second breath and by finding themselves a peaceful place when they were feeling stress.
She also spoke of the human need to feel a connection to whanau especially in the context of elderly people and babies.
