Today we had Cohen Stewart from Fish and Game speak to us about systems that help our waterways stay clean.
We found out that not just pollution is harming our fresh water streams, rivers and creeks, but our animals as well.
Mostly cattle and sheep are polluting our waterways with their wastes. This kills fish such as trout and eels and also causes bad algae and muck to building up in the waterways.
We can stop this by not letting our cattle and sheep near the creek or stream with electric fences. We also found that we can stop this happening just by planting flax, tussocks and native bushes along the bank of rivers or streams. This will stop the wastes from entering into water and also soak up the nutrients within the stream.
